Jalapeno pepper was named after the city of Xalapa (Jalapa), which is located in the Mexican federal state of Veracruz. Jalapeno pepper can grow 60-90 cm in height. It has green leaves. The flowers are white. After 70-80 days from planting, it is possible to harvest the first fresh fruits. They are 5-10 cm long and 1.0-1.5 cm wide. When ripening, they change from green to red. They are elongated in shape. One Jalapeno pepper plant can produce 25-40 fruits. They can be picked multiple times throughout the season.
Green fruits are most often consumed, while fully ripe ones are used to prepare hot sauces. The red fruits are often smoked after harvesting and after that we get the Chipotle pepper which is a synonym for the smoked Jalapeno fruit.
The taste of Jalapeno peppers is very refreshing with a small dose of spiciness. This is why this pepper is the most preferred pepper by Americans, and we believe it is the same in the rest of the world.
Fresh fruits can be used in salads, sandwiches, homemade salsas, chili con carne. The red fruits are most often used to prepare hot sauces, chipotle salsas and pastes, and they can be dried and ground and used as dry spices.
